"A white bird in a black dress..."



Having seen all 36 semi finalists run through their first rehearsals in the first four days, yesterday saw us head into the frenetic second rehearsals phase, where things happen much faster, and we are finally allowed into the hall to see the stage in all its glory!

I'm really liking the simplicity of the stage, which is far less elaborate than in the past few years.  We have an audience capacity of around 7,000 which is also down on recent contests, but it doesn't feel too small inside.

Highlights from yesterday included the very properly spoken press conference moderator asking the Finns about the symbolism behind their song Blackbird, and then saying to Leena, "But you are a white bird in a black dress, yes?"  I know it wasn't meant in that way, but Hass and I sat there giggling away like two wee schoolboys!  A little later she asked then what a film of their life would look like and Lasse said it would have to be a dark horror film with him playing the skinny creepy guy.  Ms Moderator pipes up, "yes, you certainly are that!"  Cheeky mare.


Svala from Iceland delivered a great performance and I want to see her go through.  Check out her fancy boots (this isn't her stage costume).  My mate Felix (second from the left) is Head of Delegation for them this year.


Robin wore no socks again...


Demy brought her hot boys, fully clothed this time...

Tamara from Georgia was brilliant, and seems destined to reach the final...


Kasia Moś from Poland did a competent performance, and her manager is a bit yum...

...and finally there was poor Blanche, destined to be the bride and not the bridesmaid...

Later today I'll finally get to my first party, courtesy of my lovely friends in the Icelandic delegation.  More on that tomorrow.

Also, today see the first rehearsal of the big 5, including red-hot favourite Francesco Gabbani from Italy!  Yay!!!

Semi 1 - Great result!!!

It wasn't just Jedward who were ecstatic with last night's Semi 1 results!  9 of the 10 I predicted got through, and the one I got wrong was Austria, with the fabulous Hungarian song going through instead (and that was one of my faves anyway). Apparently Romania had huge problems hearing their track in their in-ear monitors, so they were relieved to get through.  They drew to sing in 14th position. We got some interesting insider info via some delegations at the after party (which finished at 6am this morning!!!).  Apparently the Icelandic 12 didn't go to Denmark as expected, but to Cyprus!  Fab performance from Ivi, and I see this going Top 5 on Saturday. We also heard that the Cypriot 12 did not go to Cypriot singer Eleftheria, who is singing for Greece, but to Albania, and the amazing Rona, who delivered a fantastic performance which had the audience on it's feet. But it was Gorgeous Pasha from Moldova who had the best luck of the night

The Fire & The Flames

It's day 4, and today we watched the artists from the second half of Semi 2 take the stage for the first time. For many, this meant looking forward to seeing Gjon's Tears from Switzerland, one of the big favourites.  For me, though, it was all about the superbly clever 80's flashback brought by Denmark's Fyr Og Flamme.  And, my word, did they deliver!  Easily the standout performance of the day for me, and even more fun than in DMGP.  Jesper was in his element cavorting around the huge stage like a thing possessed.  This really is an ironic pastiche of 80's pop and it's executed perfectly.  This HAS to get to the Final, and I'm convinced it'll be there!  By the way, they mentioned in their press conference that one of their biggest 80's influences is Modern Talking - fab! So, if I told you this morning that one of the hot favourite, dark etherial and moody ballads was going to be performed by the singer as a modern interpretative dance track, you'
